*Reposting for the day crowd since I had so much fun last night.
Well Jalops, the fable is true. The rust you see is three times worse in reality. At this rate I'm going to be repainting the whole car! Which is kinda OK with me because the original owner repainted it at one point and did a terrible job. I'm going to be sending a number of small body pieces off for media blasting.
Passenger side hood hinge mount.
My original purpose for buying a project car was to learn new skills. Boy am I learning!
You cant really tell in this picture but trust me, there's lots of little holes in the passenger floor board. I've already removed the front seat support.
I bought a Blair Rotabroach spot weld cutter and a seam separator.
I used a 1/8 inch drill bit to place center marks in the spot welds. I wasn't having good luck with a center punch leaving a deep enough divot.
You can see where the cutter tool cut around the spot welds. Then I took the seam separator and pried the two pieces apart ever so gently at the front right edge.
Next I took my die grinder and cut the channel on the left and the piece popped right out.
I'll be cutting out all the rust on the inner piece to replace that. Forming the above piece is going to take some time. After lying in bed thinking about it last night I'll probably make it out of three pieces.

I haven't seen those spot-weld tools before - fascinating. I'm dealing with even more rust in my project, shockingly.

Darn thing works really well. You just have to be careful not to cut through both sheets of metal. I did that on my first one.
What are you working on?

This. '63 Ford Ranchero. Minimal engine compartment rust, but quarters gone down both sides, no floorboards, firewall and A-pillar rust, roof rust, severe tailgate damage, and some miscellaneous problems under the bed.

Oh yeah! That's great.
I was looking at a 65' Falcon before deciding on the Datsun. What's in it, 170 six or a 260 V8?

It had a base 144 six. It is going to have a Rover 4.2 - 261ci, but a lot lighter than the Ford 260. This is what that Jaguar rear suspension is going in.
